$30 ANC Headphones vs a 90dB Workshop: dbsono G901

I don't wear headphones for music. I wear them because my basement hits 90 decibels. So can a thirty dollar pair actually protect my hearing?

The question I wanted answered in this dbsono G901 review wasn't whether $30 headphones sound good. It was whether they could protect my hearing.

I run a manufacturing business out of my basement. When the CNC machine is going, with the chip collector vacuum behind it, the UV LED printer running and the air conditioner on top of that, the room gets above 90 decibels. That's genuinely damaging territory.

So headphones aren't a music accessory in my house. They're PPE that happens to play music. And the pair I'd been using cost four times as much.

Why budget ANC headphones had a specific job to do

I'd already reviewed the Wyze ANC headphones for exactly this reason, after moving off AirPods Pro. Earbuds sit in your ear. They don't cover it. Covering it turned out to matter more than I expected.

So the G901 had one job: match the Wyze, at a third of the price.

The test: an afternoon in a 90dB workshop

I put them on and worked. Then I deliberately swapped back to the Wyze to compare directly, same room, same machines running.

There was maybe a little difference, but nothing that would make me keep using the Wyze. The noise cancelling sits about level with them.

And then the actual surprise

The Wyze feel like they're squeezing my head. They give me a headache after a while. With these on, I can barely tell they're there.

When you're wearing hearing protection for hours, comfort isn't a nice-to-have. It's the difference between wearing them and not bothering.

That's the whole review in one sentence. A headphone you take off after ninety minutes protects nothing. On comfort, these beat everything else I've used, at any price.

Sound: an action movie and a sink full of dishes

I'm not an audio junkie and I'm not going to pretend to be. So I tested them the way I'd actually use them.

The explosion test

I sat in the recliner and watched an action show, specifically to hear whether the concussive explosions landed. They did. If you're gaming or watching anything with a low end, these will not disappoint you.

The chores test

Then I did chores, because if you're doing chores you may as well have music on. Washed dishes, vacuumed a rug. The sound held up and I wasn't disappointed.

Do they match Apple's AirPods Max? No. They're also not $549. I've got four kids. $549 is food, it's the electric bill. What I want is the thing that costs me the least and is still genuinely good, and for thirty dollars I think dbsono went after exactly that and hit it.

What I liked

✦  The comfort. The single best thing about them, and the reason they beat the Wyze in practice rather than on paper.

✦  The battery is faintly ridiculous. 60 hours without ANC, 40 with it on. For a $30 headphone that's hard to argue with.

✦  Noise cancelling that does the job. Not AirPods Max territory, but level with the Wyze, in a room above 90dB.

✦  Dual connectivity. Bluetooth 5.4 to my laptop and phone at once. I listen on my phone while editing, then jump to the laptop to check the cut.

✦  Transparency mode. One toggle and I can hear a kid who's wandered into the office.

✦  Wired or wireless, and USB-C, which is where everything is going anyway.

✦  The price. Thirty dollars. It keeps being the answer to every complaint.

What I didn't

✦  No app. My biggest gripe by a distance. There's no way to touch the EQ. I'd like to pull the bass down or push the treble up, and I simply can't.

✦  No water resistance. This is the one that genuinely bothers me. We get rain in Colorado out of nowhere. If I'm on a hike with an audiobook on, that's a real risk.

✦  You can't use them while charging. Though with 60 hours of playback, I struggle to picture when that bites.

✦  Build is mostly ABS plastic with one metal part. Some people flag this. It feels sturdy enough to me, but I do have four kids, so anything is possible.

✦  Other reviewers report bass complaints and sound leakage. I didn't find the bass lacking at all. Flagging it because it comes up often enough to be worth knowing.

Should you buy the dbsono G901?

Buy them if

You want hearing protection that plays music, that you'll actually keep on your head for a full working day, for roughly the price of a takeaway. These are the ones I kept using after the review was over. That's usually the only endorsement that means anything.

Skip them if

You need to EQ your sound, because there's no app and that's that. Or if they're going outdoors with you, because the total absence of water resistance is a genuine gamble.

If you want a $549 headphone, buy a $549 headphone. I'm not going to talk you out of it. But if you've been assuming $30 buys you junk, this one is the counter-example, and it's still on my head.
