Three packs across the front of the house. Setup is genuinely easy. The decision you need to make before you climb the ladder is how you're attaching them.

This Govee Curtain Lights 2 review covers three packs across the front of our house, and the honest headline is that the lights are the easy part.

The hard part is a decision you make before you touch a ladder, and nobody warns you about it because it isn't in the box. It's on your siding.

What's in the box

Power adapter, the curtain itself with its anchors, and the hooks you hang it from. That's the lot.

The anchors come attached. We'd already fitted ours ready for the house, which saves fiddling with them halfway up a ladder.

Hanging them: the hooks are the real decision

The supplied hooks are adhesive. Peel the backing, stick them up, and the curtain slides straight in. It also slides back out, which matters more than it sounds.

The lights take an afternoon. The hooks are a decision about your siding, and you only get to make it once.

Your three options

1. Adhesive hooks, left up year-round. What we did. They're staying until next year, which is the honest reason adhesive works for us.

2. Adhesive hooks, taken down each season. Now you're peeling adhesive off your siding every year. Think about that before you commit.

3. Staple gun, or hooks you already have. More permanent and more secure, but you're committed to your spacing rather than Govee's, and you have to get it right first time.

I had help

Steve Does came over to give me a hand with this one. He's in Colorado, he'd reviewed these before and put a set up himself, so he knew exactly where the fiddly bits were. If you're doing it alone, budget more time than I did. Thanks Steve.

The app is the actual product

Adding the lights is straightforward. Plus sign, top right corner, follow it through. But the app is where these earn their money.

Presets

There are presets for basically every holiday, and plenty of people run those and never touch anything else. Which is fine. It also means you're paying a premium for something you're not using.

Custom designs

You can design your own, and this is the actual reason to buy these. If you were only ever going to run the built-in Christmas preset, a cheaper set of lights would do the same job for less money.

What I liked

✦  Setup was genuinely easy. The hooks and the slide-in design are well thought through.

✦  The app does more than I expected. Presets for every holiday, plus proper custom design.

✦  It slides out as easily as it slides in. Taking them down is not a job.

✦  The anchors come pre-attached, which is one less thing to do at the top of a ladder.

✦  They scale. We ran three packs across the front and it works as one continuous display.

What I didn't

✦  Adhesive is a commitment. Fine if they live there. Annoying if you take them down each year.

✦  Spacing is on you if you use your own hooks. Measure twice.

✦  Overkill if you only want presets. If you're never opening the app twice, buy cheaper lights.

Should you buy Govee Curtain Lights 2?

Buy them if

You want lights on the front of the house that change with the season, and you'll genuinely play with the app. That's the buyer. Setup took an afternoon with a friend helping.

Skip them if

You'll set one preset in November and never touch it again. You're paying for flexibility you won't use.
