Haushoff Portable AC: 10,000 BTU, No App
Our bedroom sits over the garage and hits 82 degrees. I put a 10,000 BTU portable unit in the window to find out whether it could actually fix that.

THE VERDICT
It does the job it's bought for. 10,000 BTU is genuinely a lot of cooling for a bedroom, and at 55 decibels it's quiet enough to sleep through, which is the number that actually matters at 2am. Install took an afternoon. The one thing I'd change is the absence of app control: in 2026 I expect to be able to switch the cooling on before I get home, and this can't do that.
If you've ever had a bedroom over a garage, you already know the problem. All the heat the garage collects during the day comes straight up through the floor, and by evening the room is unusable. Ours sits at around 82 degrees.
That's the actual test for this Haushoff portable air conditioner review. Not a spec sheet. A room that has beaten every other thing we've tried.
10,000 BTU into a 16 by 8 room
10,000 BTU is a lot of cooling, and our room is only about 16 by 8 feet. That mismatch is deliberate and it's the reason this works: an undersized unit in a room that's fighting a heat source underneath it will run flat out forever and never win.
I set it to cool at 68 with the room at 82. It got there.
55 decibels is the number that matters
Everyone reads the BTU figure. The one you'll actually live with is the noise, because an air conditioner in a bedroom cycles on and off all night.
About 55 decibels running. Quiet enough that it kicking on doesn't wake you up.
There's also a sleep setting, which dims the display so you're not staring at a lit panel in a dark room. Small thing, obviously designed by someone who has tried to sleep next to one of these.
The part I nearly missed: the exhaust hose sleeve
There's an insulating sleeve in the box that slips over the exhaust hose, and it's easy to overlook.
Don't. The exhaust hose carries the heat you just pulled out of the room, and without the sleeve that hose radiates it straight back in while you're standing there wondering why the room isn't getting cold. Fitting it takes ten seconds and it makes the unit's job measurably easier.

What I liked

What I didn't
✦ No app control, and that's the real miss. We have a unit downstairs I can switch on from anywhere, so the house is comfortable by the time we get home. This one can't do that, and once you've had it you notice its absence every time.
✦ It's a portable, so it needs a window. The hose has to go somewhere, and that limits where the unit can live.
Should you buy the Haushoff portable air conditioner?
Buy it if you have one room that's always too hot
A room over a garage, a converted attic, a west-facing bedroom: this is exactly the job. At around $300 for 10,000 BTU it's a lot of cooling for the money, and it's quiet enough to leave running overnight.
Skip it if you need to switch it on from your phone
If pre-cooling the room before you get home is part of why you're buying, this isn't the unit. That's the one feature I'd want added, and no amount of BTU makes up for it.
