I took it into the woods for a night hike to test every mode in the dark. The feature I didn't expect to care about is the one I'd now look for on every headlamp.

THE VERDICT

A genuinely excellent headlamp, and the one I'll be reaching for on early starts. 1,300 lumens is real, the build feels like it would survive a drop, and the silicone band doesn't fight my head. The feature that sold me isn't the brightness: it's that when the rechargeable cell dies, you can drop in three AAAs and carry on. Backed by a 10-year warranty, which is not a normal thing to see.

Most headlamp reviews happen on a bench. This NEXTORCH eStar headlamp review happened in the woods, at night, on a trail we actually hike, which is the only place a headlamp tells you the truth.

The headline number is 1,300 lumens. The number that actually changed my mind was three.

The AAA fallback is the real feature

The eStar ships with a rechargeable cell that charges over USB-C. Nothing unusual there. But you can also pull it out and run the lamp on three AAA batteries instead.

That sounds like a footnote until you think about where headlamps get used. A sealed rechargeable light that runs flat two hours from the car is a paperweight, and there is nothing you can do about it. This one takes the batteries you can buy at any petrol station on the way to the trailhead.

You don't have to use the rechargeable battery. You can put AAAs in here.

There is a small trade-off: on AAAs you give up a little performance. It wasn't enough for me to notice on the trail, and it's a rounding error against the alternative of being in the dark.

The modes, and how you actually reach them

Everything is done with a twist dial rather than a click sequence, which in the cold with gloves on is the right decision.

1. Twist the top to move through low, medium and high on the white light.

2. Use the side dial to fine-tune the brightness up and down, rather than being stuck on preset steps.

3. Twist past off in the other direction for the red light, and then again for SOS.

4. Tilt the housing to aim it at your feet or out ahead of you.

The tilt matters more than it sounds. On a night hike I keep it pointed down at my feet, because what hurts you on a trail in the dark is a root or a rock, not the thing forty metres away. Being able to drop the beam without dropping the brightness is the difference between hiking and picking your way.

The red light is there to protect your night vision, and the SOS mode blinks Morse for anyone who knows to look for it. I hope never to use that one.

What 1,300 lumens actually means here

Worth being precise, because the box number and the useful numbers are different things. 1,300 lumens is spot and flood running together. On spot alone or flood alone you get 650. The red light is 50.

Spot is a narrow 12 degree beam for distance; flood is a 90 degree wash for what's immediately around you. Running both is what gets you the headline figure, and on the trail it genuinely lit the path better than I expected from something this light.

The warranty is not a normal warranty

Ten years. Most headlamps in this class give you one. That's not a spec, it's a statement about how long the manufacturer expects the thing to survive, and at around $70 for a premium headlamp it reframes the price entirely.

What I liked

✦  The AAA fallback. No headlamp should be a paperweight when the cell dies, and this one isn't.

✦  The twist dial and side adjuster. Real controls you can find in the dark, not a click-count you have to memorise.

✦  Tilt. Aiming at my feet on a night hike is what I do 90% of the time.

✦  The silicone band is genuinely comfortable, doesn't grip my head, and is easy on sensitive skin.

✦  Build feels solid. I'd back it to survive a drop, and NEXTORCH rate it to a metre.

✦  IP67, so rain on the way back isn't a problem.

✦  A 10-year warranty against the usual one.

What I didn't

✦  Running on AAAs costs you some performance. Not enough that I noticed on the trail, but it's a fallback rather than an equal.

✦  There's no charging port on the housing. The USB-C port is on the battery itself, so you charge the cell rather than the lamp. Everyone has USB-C now, so this bothered me less than I expected, but it's worth knowing before it surprises you at a campsite.

Should you buy the NEXTORCH eStar?

Buy it if you start in the dark

If you do night hikes, or the kind of long day hikes that begin well before sunrise, this is an easy recommendation. It's bright enough, it's light enough that you forget it's on, and the AAA fallback means running out of charge is an inconvenience rather than the end of the walk. At around $70 with a 10-year warranty, the maths is not difficult.

Skip it if you only need a light for the shed

1,300 lumens, IP67 and a 205m throw are trail specs. If the furthest you go is the garage at night, you're paying for a beam you'll never use.
