THE VERDICT

The best everyday carry recommendation I have right now. It is genuinely pocketable, the 650 lumens is real, and the 7075 aluminium body and metal switch feel like a tool rather than a toy. Two honest catches: the clip can work its way loose in a pocket, and the battery is sealed in, so when it's flat it's flat. Neither one stops me carrying it every day.

This RovyVon Aurora A3 G4 review starts with a fair question: why would anyone everyday carry a flashlight? I asked myself the same thing. Then I dropped my phone down the side of the car seat. Then my daughter lost an earring in the bottom of a backpack. Then I started getting up before everyone else in a three-storey house and realised I could either flip the stair light on and wake all four kids, or I could not.

That's the honest case for a keychain flashlight. Not tactical fantasy. Small, boring problems that happen constantly.

The Aurora A3 G4 is about the size of my pinky and weighs 0.81oz, which is under an ounce. You genuinely forget it's on you. The claim on the box is 650 lumens, which for something this size sounds like marketing. So I took it into my backyard at night to find out.

Is 650 lumens on a keychain a real number?

Yes. That was the short version of my backyard test, and it genuinely surprised me.

I ran it through every level in the dark, from moonlight up to high. On its highest setting this thing throws far more light than a torch this size has any business throwing. RovyVon rate the beam at 360ft (110m), and standing in a dark backyard that felt about right; I was lighting up things at the back fence and beyond with a light clipped to a keyring.

It's about the size of my pinky. It has no business being this bright.

Phone cameras aggressively brighten a dark scene, which flattens exactly the difference you are trying to see. Trust the numbers over any night footage, including mine.

How long it actually runs

The 70 minute figure attached to this flashlight all over the internet is the charge time, not the runtime. It is worth separating the two, because they get conflated constantly and it makes the light look worse than it is.

70 minutes is the charge time. That is how long the built-in 300mAh cell takes to fill over USB-C. Runtime depends entirely on which level you are using, and the spread is enormous:

Moonlight (0.5 lm) up to 56 hours

High (650 lm) about 1.25 hours

So the idea that a night hike gives you 70 minutes and then darkness is simply wrong. That is only true if you pin it on maximum the entire time, which nobody does. On moonlight or low, the level you would actually walk with, you have more hours than you have hike. The realistic pattern is low most of the time with bursts of high when you need to see properly.

How the clicks work, because it's the one learning curve

This is the part that takes a week to get into your fingers. It's worth learning, because the whole interface is one button.

1. Momentary high: from off, press and hold. Full brightness while held, off when you let go. This is the one you'll use most.

2. Constant on: double-click. Then single clicks cycle moonlight, low, medium, high.

3. Off: hold the button for about half a second.

4. Strobe: three rapid clicks. Genuinely useful broken down at the side of a road.

5. Lockout: five rapid clicks and the emitter blinks twice. Five more unlocks it. This is what stops it cooking in your pocket.

It also remembers the last level you used for more than three minutes, so it comes back on where you left it. The lockout is the feature that makes a pocket flashlight viable at all: without it you eventually sit down, press the button through the fabric, and find a hot torch and a dead battery.

Two spec notes. The low level is 25 lumens and moonlight is 0.5. And the body being 7075 aluminium rather than plastic is a real part of why it feels like a tool. The Gen 4 switch is metal too, where older ones were rubber, and the click feedback is much better for it.

What I liked

✦  It's genuinely pocketable at under an ounce. You forget it's there, which is the whole point of everyday carry.

✦  650 lumens is a real number, not a spec sheet number. The backyard test settled that.

✦  The magnetic mount. Sticking it to something metal and having both hands free is more useful than it sounds.

✦  USB-C. No proprietary cable, no cell to source.

✦  The five-click lockout. It's what makes carrying it loose actually work.

✦  Metal switch and 7075 aluminium. It doesn't feel like a giveaway.

What I didn't

✦  The clip can work loose in a pocket. This is my real complaint. Clipped to the outside, you could lose the whole flashlight and not notice.

✦  The battery is sealed in. No spare cell, no swap. When it's flat you're waiting on a charger, which is the one place a AAA light still wins.

✦  The beam doesn't adjust. It's a broad flood with no way to focus it down to a tighter throw.

✦  The click interface takes learning. Nothing is labelled and you will turn it on wrong a few times before it's muscle memory.

Should you buy the RovyVon Aurora A3 G4?

Buy it if you keep needing a light you don't have

If the problem you're solving is phones down car seats, earrings in backpacks, dark stairs at 5am, or a hike that ran longer than planned, this is the answer. It's an easy recommendation at around $33, and it's the flashlight I actually carry.

Skip it if you need runtime you can refill

If you're out for days rather than hours, the sealed battery is a genuine limitation, and a light that takes swappable cells is the better tool. Also skip it if you want a tight, focused beam, because this one only does flood.
