THE VERDICT

The SUNTEK SRM3150 is a wire-free RTK robot mower, and the wire-free part is the whole story. There is no perimeter cable to bury and no separate RTK mast to plant in the middle of the lawn, because the antenna sits on the charging station. Setup is genuinely a charging station, a screwed-on RTK antenna and a safety check; the mower itself needs nothing. You map by driving it around with on-screen joysticks, or hand the job to the AI, and you can mix the two. Five zones live in one map, each with its own no-go areas, mowing angle and cutting height, and it holds up to 1,500 m2 of coverage. It avoided the kids' toys, took the hill in the back yard without complaint, and took itself home to charge when the battery ran down or when it started to rain. Two real limits: it needs a clear approach to the dock or it gets confused finding its way back, and the divots under a swing set are deep enough that the area has to be a no-go zone and gets trimmed by hand. Neither changes the verdict. This does the large, boring majority of the job and it does it on a schedule you set once.

The thing I kept looking for in the box was the wire. Every robot mower I had read about before this one wanted a boundary cable pegged around the edge of the lawn, and usually a separate RTK mast staked somewhere with a clear view of the sky. That is the part that stops most people: it turns a purchase into a landscaping project. This SUNTEK robot lawn mower review starts there, because the wire never turned up.

There is no boundary wire, and no separate RTK pole

The RTK antenna screws onto the top of the charging station. That is it. You put the base somewhere with a clear line out to the yard, connect the antenna to the port marked RTK behind the back panel, make sure it threads all the way in, and clip the panel back on. Get that connection loose and you will have positioning problems, so it is worth the extra ten seconds.

The boundary is drawn in software instead. The mower knows where it is to within centimetres, and the map you draw is the fence.

Mapping is genuinely fun, which I did not expect

You map manually by driving the mower with two on-screen joysticks, walking behind it while the outline fills in on the phone. It feels like an RC car. I traced the lawn line, skipped the bare dirt at the top of the hill so it would not waste battery mowing nothing, and closed the loop back at the start.

Then there is auto mapping. Hand it over and the mower finds the grass line itself and follows it around. It is thorough and it is slow, and the useful part is that you can take back control at any point. I let the AI do the fiddly edges and drove the straightforward runs myself.

The boundary isn't a wire in the ground. It's a line you draw with a joystick.

No-go zones are the feature that makes it liveable

There is a tree in the middle of the back yard, two more out front, and a basketball hoop with a pole that goes into the lawn. Each one gets a no-go zone: you drive a small loop around it and save it, and it shows up in red on the map instead of the yellow-green of a mowing area.

In practice it went right around them. Not near-miss close, but close enough that I was not left with a ring of long grass to deal with afterwards.

Five zones in one map

The back yard is one zone, the front is another, both in the same map, each with their own no-go areas. You can hold five zones and up to 1,500 m2 of total coverage, and you pick which zones to cut before each run by tapping them on or off.

Per-zone settings matter more than they sound. Mowing angle is adjustable, and I set mine to 60 degrees because that is the direction the stripes look right from the deck. Cutting height runs 1.2 to 2.4 inches. Edge cut mode, obstacle avoidance sensitivity and tall grass detection are all per-task. I turned obstacle avoidance down from high to medium after the first run and it was happier for it.

It sees toys, and it sees them in time

Obstacle avoidance is a binocular vision system with 3D depth sensing rather than a bump sensor, which is the difference between stopping before a thing and stopping after hitting it. The honest test at my house is not a cone in the middle of the lawn, it is my kids leaving toys out. It went around them.

It also never rode up on something and beached itself, which is the failure mode that turns a robot mower into a thing you have to go rescue.

It comes home on its own

Low battery and it returns to the dock, charges, and picks up where it left off, which is what makes a yard bigger than one charge still workable. Rain is the one I did not think about before owning it: it detects rain, stops mowing, and takes itself back rather than dragging a wet clumped mess around the lawn. Anyone who has mowed wet grass knows why that matters.

Then you set a schedule and stop thinking about it

There is an auto schedule that calculates its own cadence from the size of your lawn and how fast the grass is growing. I prefer to set it myself: pick the zone, check the task mode has not defaulted back to adaptive direction, set a start and a second window later in the day so it can charge in between, choose the days, save.

Mine runs Mondays. The last time I thought about mowing was the day I set that.

What I liked

✦  No wire, no mast. The single biggest barrier to owning one of these is gone. The RTK antenna lives on the base station.

✦  Ready out of the box. Screw the antenna to the charging station and you are done. The mower itself needs nothing doing to it.

✦  The obstacle avoidance is real. It went around my kids' toys instead of through them, and it never got itself stuck on one.

✦  It handled the hill. The slope in the back yard was the thing I was most unsure about going into this, and it took it without drama.

✦  Rain detection. It stops and goes home rather than churning wet grass into clumps.

✦  Five zones and no-go areas. A front yard, a back yard, and rings around three trees and a hoop post, all in one map.

✦  Set it once. A weekly schedule and the job simply stops being on your list.

What I'd change

✦  It needs a clear run home. I first placed the dock so the approach passed close by the swing set and it got confused finding its way in. Moved to a spot with a clean path, it was perfect every time. Worth thinking about before you pick the spot.

✦  Swing-set divots are a no-go zone. Kids' feet dig holes under the swings deep enough that the mower can end up sideways, so that patch has to be excluded and trimmed by hand. It is a small area and the machine still takes the other 95% of the job, but it is not a total replacement for a trimmer.

Buy it if you have a normal suburban lot and no interest in mowing it

A front yard, a back yard, a few trees, maybe a slope. That is exactly the shape of lawn this is built for, and the wire-free setup means you are not committing a Saturday to installing it before you get any benefit.

Think twice if your yard is mostly obstacles

Play structures, tight side passages and anywhere the ground is chewed up will end up as no-go zones, and no-go zones mean a trimmer. The more of your lawn is like that, the less this does for you.

I went into this sceptical about robot mowers. The thing that changed my mind was not a spec, it was standing on the deck with my son while the lawn was being cut without either of us doing it.
