Wyze Cam Pan v3 Review: A $30 Camera, Honestly

We put these in the kids' rooms and the basement. Here's what thirty dollars actually buys, and exactly which features Wyze put behind a subscription.

I didn't buy these to catch burglars, and this Wyze Cam Pan v3 review is going to be honest about that from the start.

Our kids play in the basement. When we're upstairs and someone starts crying, we want to know in two seconds whether we need to run down there. That's the actual job.

So we've got them in the girls' room, the boys' room, and the basement. Which means price mattered more than anything else. Three cameras at flagship money was never happening in a house with four kids.

What a budget security camera actually costs

At the time of testing, Amazon's summer sale had it at $29.98. On Wyze's own site it was nearer $40.

Even at forty dollars it's a good camera for the money. But that's a 33% swing on the identical box, so check both before you buy. Buying three of them, that gap is a fourth camera.

The v3's real upgrade: it can go outside

This is the third version, and here's why that matters. The v2 could not go outdoors at all.

The v3 is IP65 weather resistant, so it's genuinely indoor/outdoor. If you've been waiting for a Cam Pan you could put on a porch, this is the one that finally does it.

What the subscription actually gates

This is the part to be clear-eyed about, and it's where most $30-camera reviews go quiet.

Free with the camera

Live view, 360 pan, colour night vision, motion and sound detection, two-way audio, privacy mode. That's a real camera and it costs nothing beyond the hardware.

Behind the paywall

1. Person, vehicle, pet and package detection. The features every listing leads with.

2. Full-length event recording. Without it you get clips, not the whole event.

3. Viewing your cameras in a browser. Phone app only otherwise.

If you're buying three of these on the strength of person detection, price the subscription in before you decide it's a bargain.

That's not a scandal. It's how the entire category works now. But for our use, which is whether a kid is crying and whether I need to go down, the free tier does the job completely. Yours might not.

What I liked

✦  The price. $30 means you cover the rooms that matter instead of agonising over one expensive camera.

✦  IP65. The first Cam Pan you can actually put outside.

✦  360 degree pan. One camera covers a whole room rather than one corner of it.

✦  Colour night vision. Wyze promise night as clear as day, and it's better than the grey-green mush I expected.

✦  Two-way audio. Useful more often than I thought, especially with kids downstairs.

✦  Privacy mode. A camera in a child's bedroom needs an off switch you can trust.

What I didn't

✦  The good detection is subscription-only. Person, pet, package, vehicle. All of it.

✦  No browser viewing without paying. Phone app or nothing.

✦  1080p, not 4K. Fine for what we use it for, but don't expect to read a number plate.

✦  The price swings by a third depending where you buy it. Annoying rather than damning, but check.

Should you buy the Wyze Cam Pan v3?

Buy it if

You're a budget-minded household that wants several cameras rather than one good one. That was us exactly, and at $30 a unit you can actually do it.

Skip it if

You want smart detection without a monthly bill. That's the trade you're making here, and no amount of good hardware changes it.
